95 THESES TO THE MODERN EVANGELICAL CHURCH by Greg Gordon

1. The “church” at large has forgotten that the chief end of man is to glorify God. (Rom 16:27; 1Cor 6:20; Mt 6:9; 1Cor 10:31)

2. Christians ignore most of the methods, practices and principles found in the book of Acts. (Acts 2:42,44; Acts 2:46; Acts 2:38)

3. Many treat “church” like any other social club or sports event that they might attend. (Acts 2:46; Heb 10:25; Acts 1:14)

4. We’ve made Christianity about the individual rather than the community of believers. (Rom 12:5; 1Cor 12:12; 2Tim 4:16)

5. In most “churches” the priesthood of all believers isn’t acknowledged and the role of pastor is abused. (1Pt 2:9; 1Cor 12:12; Eph 4:11-13)

6. The “church” as a whole has lost the concept of their being grafted into the promises given to Israel. (Rom 11:15, 17-18, 20, 25)

7. There needs to be a recovery of teaching the whole counsel of God, especially in expository form. (Acts 20:27; 1Tim 4:6, 2Tim 2:15)

8. We take it too lightly that we have the blessing and honor of having God’s Scriptures in our possession. (Ps 119:16; Acts 13:44; Neh 8:9)

9. There has never been more access to the Word of God, yet so little reading of it. (1Tim 4:13; Neh 8:1-3; Ps 119:59)

10. Some read the Scriptures to attain knowledge, but do not practice what they read. (Jam 1:22; Mt 7:21; 3Jn 4)

11. Worship has become an idol in many “churches.” The music often resembles that of the world. (Amos 5:23; Phil 4:8; 1Jn 5:21)

12. The world is shaping the views of the “church” more than the “church” shaping the world. (Rom 12:2; Mt 5:13; 1Cor 1:22-23)

13. The “church” spends more money on dog food than on missions. (2Cor 9:6; Lk 21:2; Acts 4:34-35)

35. There is an epidemic of a “mock” salvation message. It is correct in doctrine, but false in reality. (2Cor 3:6; 1Jn 5:11-12; Rom 8:9)

36. A salvation that does not make men holy is trusted in by a deceived multitude. (Jude 4; Rom 8:1; Rom 6:17-18)

37. There is a needed perseverance in the truths of the Gospel without unbelief. (Eph 1:1; Heb 6:11-12; Heb 10:26-27)

38. A great need is to see “christians” become saints in actual experience. (1Jn 2:29; Col 3:5-8; Tit 3:8)

39. Many professors of religion are forbidding people to be a part of the holy body of Christ. (Mt 23:13; Ps 119:1-2; 2Pt 1:3-4)

47. Run from churches where you’re comfortable in your sin. (1Cor 14:25; Heb 10:30-31; Heb 4:13)

48. Run from churches that use the pulpit of God for a personal agenda. (Jude 10-11,19; 3Jn 9)

49. Run from those who preach division between races and cultures. (Jam 2:4, Gal 3:28, Rev 5:9)

50. Run from ungodly, spasmodic movements and endless empty prophesying. (Jer 5:13; 1Cor 14:33, 1Jn 2:16)

51. Run from preachers who tell mostly stories and jokes. (Eph 5:4; Tit 1:8; 2:12)

52. Run from those that are only after money, who use one gimmick after another to get your money. (2Pt 2:3; 2Cor 12:14; 1Cor 9:18)

53. The phrase “accept Jesus as your personal Saviour” is not found in the Scriptures. (Rom 10:9-10; Col 1:13; Acts 26:20)

54. Evidence of true conversion does not seem important to modern day Christians. (1Jn 2:6; 1Jn 4:17; Mt 7:20)

55. Thousands of sinners think of God as having only one attribute: Love! But they continue in sin. (Rom 1:18; Acts 5:11; Ps 2:12)

56. “God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life!” has hindered true evangelism. (Rom 3:19; Acts 26:18; Phil 3:18-21)

58. There has clearly arisen a careless mixture of 20th century reasoning with God’s revelation. (Col 2:8; Rom 1:25; Gal 1:6)

59. Decisionism and the “sinner’s prayer” has been a major cause of false conversions in the “church.” (2Pt 2:1-2; Eph 2:4-5; 2Cor 5:17-18)

60. Many will be surprised to hear Jesus say, “I never knew you, depart from me.” (Mt 7:22-23; 1Cor 6:9-10; Gal 5:19-21)

I want to share my faith but I just don't know where to start.

"I want to share my faith but I just don't know where to start."  I had someone ask this to my wife after they saw pictures on Facebook of our first ever Prayer Stop event here in Korea.  So, I decided it might be easier to just create a blog entry that covers many resources and ideas for beginning in evangelism.  Let me start off by saying that this list isn't in the least exhaustive and also that I am not an expert on evangelism.  

My journey into evangelism started by going to Bible College and taking a course on personal evangelism. This class had us do many mock one on one conversations using the Romans Road approach, but it never actually had us do it for real.  Much like my wife's friend, at this point, I wanted to know how to do this in real life.  Many years later, after completed my degree in missions and theology, I was flipping channels and saw Kirk Cameron on TBN.  He had just finished a sermon and was talking about it.  I was interested! I loved the Growing Pains TV show and wanted to know what he could have been talking about.  I caught the sermon online and was amazed at the teaching.  He delivered a sermon called, Hell's Best Kept Secret.  This truly changed the way I viewed how to evangelize and spurred me to do more research.  I contacted another organization, the Great News Network, that had people doing street evangelism in Oklahoma City and met up with them one Saturday night to watch and see.  I went out almost weekly after that initial night for over two years before God moved us to South Korea.  So, I have many resources to link to that I have found over the last 5 years or so.

I will say that evangelism is a progressive thing.  You learn one thing and that will progress into something more.  The first step in evangelism is passing our Gospel tracts.  If you have high quality tracts, they will catch people's eye and they will want to look it over.  There are many quality places to get tracts from.  Some of my favorite places are listed below.

I will now just list some of the resources that I have found for you to look over and learn from as well.

God Has A Wonderful Plan For Your Life book-  This is the companion to the audio teaching by Kirk Cameron.  You can request a free hard copy of the book, or can download it to read on your computer or smartphone.  The author of the book is Ray Comfort.

Mark Cahill- great evangelist.  His book, "One Thing You Can't Do in Heaven" is phenomenal.  He also has a book that is great to give to unbelievers, "One Heartbeat Away"  These are both available in print or audio format.  You can even point people to http://oneheartbeataway.org/ where they can request a free copy of the book.  He also has a video called "Pride Comes Before Destruction" which is over three hours of him witnessing at a gay pride event in Atlanta.  He also has many free audio sermons you can download.  You should also look him up on You Tube.

Prayer Stop- This is the prayer stop we are using here in Korea to reach people.  You can learn more on the website.

Way of the Master witnessing video clips- clips are uploaded every couple of days for you to watch and learn from.

School of Biblical Evangelism- Online school that will help teach you how to share your faith.  You could also buy the book from Living Waters or at your local Christian bookstore.

These are just a few of the things I could think of in a short amount of time.  I will try to add to this list as time goes by.

Prayer Stop Evangelism- Korean First

On Saturday, November 6th, we hosted the first ever Prayer Stop kiosk evangelism event in South Korea. We set up near a subway exit and bus stop where we thought there might be English speaking people. There were 9 people that came to minister through praying for others, passing out tracts, and speaking to people one to one. We passed out many Korean tracts. We passed out a few English tracts, too.

We were able to pray with two different people. The first young Korean girl , Young Seo Chae, came up right after we set up. We explained that we were there to pray for people and asked her if she had anything we could pray with her about. She said she didn't need prayer for herself, but wanted us to pray for her brother. On Sunday, he would be taking his high school entrance exam. This exam determines what high school that he is able to attend, or if he is able to attend at all. If he does well, he can attend a better academic school. If he does poorly, he will have to attend another not so good school, or may have to stop his education. Before we prayed together, I told her we pray in Jesus' name. I then asked her if she knew who Jesus was. She said she had no religion herself, but her brother was a Christian. I explained the Gospel to her and prayed for her brother with her. Please pray that what was said and the literature that she received would penetrate her heart and that the Spirit would draw her.

The second person we prayed for was a young boy with his mother. The mother asked for prayer for her son and his dream of writing. Pamela was able to pray with them that this young boy, Sky, would be able to use his writing skills to the glory of God. The woman was a little surprised at the prayer as she expected the prayer to be for him to become more serious about his studies.

I spoke with one couple from Canada for just a few minutes and they believed that everyone, including Hitler, would go to Heaven. They had a Catholic background. They left before I could challenge them on their beliefs, so pray that the tracts they received will prick their conscience.

We have no idea what God will do with the efforts we put forth on Saturday. Our reason for going is that the Lamb who was slain would receive the reward for His suffering.
